Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
