The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
