This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
