Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to question certain calls from the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
